    Warning Signs of Drug Use

    Drug abuse affects people from all walks of life and all socioeconomic statuses. It does not matter if a persons starts taking drugs recreationally or as prescribed, tolerance and dependence can develop without them realizing. 

    Drug abuse tends to significantly alter a person's behavior and habits. Some drugs can impair th brain's ability to focus or think clearly. Some behavioral signs of drug abuse include: 

    • Sudden changes in behavior
    • Withdrawal from family and friends
    • Depression
    • Drop in grades
    • Change in peer group
    • Changes in messages posted on social media 
    • Poor concentration and short term memory
    • Increase in school absences and tardiness
    • Loss of motivation
    • Pattern of dishonesty, stealing
    • Drug related messages on clothing or possessions
    • Possession of large amounts of cash
    • Trouble with police
    • Lack of concern of appearance
    • Missing prescription pills

    Signs of Intoxication or Impairment

    Changes in physical appearance can also be a sign of drug abuse and intoxication or impairment, these signs can include: 

    • Bloodshot eyes
    • Dilated or shrunken pupils
    • Constant runny nose or cough
    • Inability to sleep, awake at unusual times
    • Cold, clammy or shaking hands
    • Slurred speech
    • Confusion
    • Sudden weight changes
    • Poor physical coordination
    • Unusual body odors
