Warning Signs of Drug Use
Drug abuse affects people from all walks of life and all socioeconomic statuses. It does not matter if a persons starts taking drugs recreationally or as prescribed, tolerance and dependence can develop without them realizing.
Drug abuse tends to significantly alter a person's behavior and habits. Some drugs can impair th brain's ability to focus or think clearly. Some behavioral signs of drug abuse include:
- Sudden changes in behavior
- Withdrawal from family and friends
- Depression
- Drop in grades
- Change in peer group
- Changes in messages posted on social media
- Poor concentration and short term memory
- Increase in school absences and tardiness
- Loss of motivation
- Pattern of dishonesty, stealing
- Drug related messages on clothing or possessions
- Possession of large amounts of cash
- Trouble with police
- Lack of concern of appearance
- Missing prescription pills
Signs of Intoxication or Impairment
Changes in physical appearance can also be a sign of drug abuse and intoxication or impairment, these signs can include:
- Bloodshot eyes
- Dilated or shrunken pupils
- Constant runny nose or cough
- Inability to sleep, awake at unusual times
- Cold, clammy or shaking hands
- Slurred speech
- Confusion
- Sudden weight changes
- Poor physical coordination
- Unusual body odors
